The area of "Mathematics of Data Science", focussing on the development
and analysis of mathematical (including statistical) methods in the context
of data, including and touching numerous areas such as applied probability,
control theory, functional analysis, geometry, graph theory, imaging science,
machine learning, numerical algorithms, optimization, and topology plays a
unique role in MATH+. In fact, it is crucial for almost all of the application
areas and emerging fields, and is also vividly present in the BMS.
To provide a platform for scientific discussions, lecture series, and other
activities supporting general knowledgegain, interactions, and research in this
exciting field, we recently founded the MATH+ Activity Group on Mathematics
of Data Science. Among the planned events are an annual research retreat,
discussion-intense Hot-Topic Talks, and a special colloquium series.
